The dish
Sambar Dal is a South Indian classic made from pigeon pea lentils. This dal gets its signature flavor from a variety of blended and whole spices like dried curry leaves, mustard seeds, kashmiri red chili powder, and more. A wholesome meal with a classic Indian kick!
Instructions
- Soak lentils in warm water for 20 minutes.
- In a large pot, heat 2 tbsp oil, then add the onion. Sauté over medium-high heat until soft (3-4 min).
- Add the tomatoes and spice blend. Cook until soft (2-3 min).
- Stir in lentils and water, bring to a boil over high heat.
- Cover and simmer on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally (25-30 min).
- Garnish with cilantro and lime. Add chili powder or chili flakes if you prefer a spicy dish!
Make it your own
- Serve over rice for a classic, hearty meal
- With Naan or our favorite bread Paratha
- Add veggies like green beans, peas, carrots, or cauliflower after adding the lentils and water, then simmer together for a one-pot meal with extra flavor and nutrition
- Enjoy on its own as a cozy, flavorful soup
