Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp neutral oil
  • ¾ cup diced onion (~1 small onion)
  • ¾ cup diced tomatoes (~1 small tomato)
  • 1 tsp fresh squeezed lime juice
  • 1 pack Mouma’s Red Lentils & spice blend
  • 5 cups water (use 4 cups for thicker texture)
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro to garnish

The dish

Masoor Dal is your new go-to meal! It’s our most popular, the gateway lentil, and one of the favorite Indian meals, made from red split lentils. When cooked, it transforms into a creamy, comforting dish layered with rich, savory spices. This is our most popular Mouma’s kit: a quick, no-fuss way to enjoy authentic Indian flavors right at home.

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat 2 tbsp oil, then add onion. Sauté over medium-high heat until soft (3-4 min).
  2. Add the tomatoes and spice blend. Cook until soft (2-3 min).
  3. Stir in lentils and water, bring to a boil over high heat.
  4. Cover and simmer on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally (~20 min).
  5. Garnish with cilantro and lime. Add chili powder or chili flakes if you prefer it spicy!

Make it your own

  • Serve over rice for a classic, hearty meal
  • With Naan or our favorite bread Paratha
  • Add veggies like green beans, peas, carrots, or cauliflower after adding the lentils and water, then simmer together for a one-pot meal with extra flavor and nutrition
  • Enjoy on its own as a cozy, flavorful soup
